Silver for the young at heart Sterling silver jewelry has always been a wonderful gift to give or receive. Many of the younger adults find sterling silver jewlery attractive and much more affordable than platinum or white gold.
To be considered sterling silver here in the United States, the item must contain 92.5% pure silver by weight. Anything less and it must be sold as simply silver. Three of the hallmarks commonly seen are "Sterling", Sterling Silver", and "925". All the above hallmarks indicate that the item is 92.5% pure silver. Many pieces seen in other countries that are marked silver do not contain the pure quantity of silver that you typically see here in the United States.
Silver and Sterling Silver can be difficult to repair when needed. Not all goldsmiths can repair silver items with the same ease. Some silver products are also rhodium plated or plated with other coatings to reduce tarnish which is a natural effect on silver. Most jewelers recommend storing silver jewelry in zip-lock plastic bags to slow the tarnishing effect. Tarnish is an interaction of the silver coming in contact with air.
